Massachusetts workplace accident leaves 1 dead

Despite the changing seasons, construction workers remain hard at work across Massachusetts. These men and women, sometimes without even knowing it, often put their lives on the line for their job. Federal and state regulations help ensure a safe work environment, but even if an employer maintains a safe environment, accidents still unfortunately are possible.

One family is likely reeling from the reality of their situation after their loved one was killed in a construction accident. According to reports, the worker was part of a crew that was installing a water pipe for a new home. The 28-year-old was using a saw to cut the pipe when it kicked back, cutting his throat. Co-workers attempted to stop the bleeding, but the victim later died at the hospital as a result of his injuries. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is now investigating the incident.

Although there are no initial indications that this event resulted from unsafe working conditions, it is important to wait for the outcome of the OSHA investigation. OSHA will thoroughly assess the circumstances that led up to any accident, and whether the victim’s employer adhered to standardized safety protocols. If a violation is found, then the employer may be fined.

Fortunately, family members in situations like this may be able to pursue death benefits through the workers’ compensation system. In order to recover these benefits, though, a family must show that they meet certain criteria. Those who wish to learn more, or challenge a denied claim, may want to seek a legal advocate who can help give them a voice.
