When the doctor you trusted to treat you made things worse

If you've needed surgery lately, you may have spent weeks or months researching all available surgeons in the area before choosing a doctor and undergoing surgery. Like most patients, you probably had high hopes that your doctors would do everything possible to perform a successful surgery.

Things didn't go as planned

There is obviously no way you could have known your surgeon was going to make a terrible mistake. When you first realized something was not right, you were probably worried and concerned.

You are not alone. Injuries due to medical negligence are surprisingly common, especially during surgery. The following is a list of some of the most frequent surgical errors:

  • Foreign objects inside the body: This occurs when a surgeon leaves a piece of gauze or other surgical item inside the body of a patient by mistake. The object can lead to infection, internal bleeding or other injuries.
  • Wrong-site surgery: In some surgeries, mistakes in preparation or inattention during the procedure can cause the surgeon to operate on the wrong side of the body, or to perform the wrong surgery altogether
  • Medication errors: Most surgical patients are given several medications, both during and after the surgery. Patients can suffer serious injuries if those medications interact with each other or if the wrong dosage or wrong drug is administered. Recourse is available to you

Hopefully, if you're reading this, it means you are either fully or well on your way to recovering from your injuries. As you begin to get your life back on track, it may take some time before you're back to your normal routines. Situations like yours often cause financial harm that's just as serious as the physical injuries.

There is no reason you should be held accountable for any medical costs sustained because of your surgeon's mistake. The law allows you to seek monetary judgment against any and all parties deemed responsible for your injuries.

A successful medical malpractice claim can provide compensation for damages that can help you offset costs thrust upon you due to another party's negligence.
