Families remember those lost in workplace accidents

Although going to work should be a completely safe thing to do, far too many workers in Massachusetts are exposed to hazardous conditions as they perform their duties. Even those who work in professions where one wouldn’t expect to be at risk can be susceptible to workplace injuries. Of course, there is a wide range of severity when it comes to these injuries. Some individuals may suffer from pulled muscles or pinched nerves, while others are killed in their lines of work. When the worst happens and a family loses a loved one, they can be totally overwhelmed with the emotional and financial struggles that inundate them.

Many Massachusetts families are in this position, as the Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health recently recognized those who have lost their lives in the past year working in our state. Seventy individuals were killed while working in 2016, marking the highest workplace death rate over the last decade. The Coalition indicated that 62 of those workers perished after suffering on-the-job injuries, while eight were firefighters who lost their lives when they succumbed to diseases related to their work.

These men’s and women’s families will struggle to overcome their losses. They will never again be able to see their loved ones’ smiles or hear their laughs, and they will be unable to share major life experiences with them. As if this isn’t enough, these families oftentimes have to cope with unexpected medical expenses, funeral costs, and the damage caused by lost wages.

In an attempt to alleviate the financial burden unfairly thrust upon them, these families can turn to the workers’ compensation benefits program. When claimed successfully, these benefits can help families find the financial stability they need while they focus on remembering their lost loved ones. The process isn’t always easy, though, as insurance companies and employers often try to shift the blame for the death. Therefore, these families may want to consider seeking assistance from a qualified legal professional.
