Warm weather may be coming to an end in the coming months, but Massachusetts’ motorcyclists will continue to ride until that time comes. These individuals might enjoy the cost-saving benefits of riding a bike or the relaxation it offers, but one thing they do not enjoy is the risk of being hit by unaware and otherwise negligent or reckless motorists. Unfortunately, statistics show that motorcyclists are at extreme risk of being injured or killed in an accident, and Massachusetts’ residents should take note.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 5,000 people were killed in motorcycle accidents in 2012. That number was up more than seven percent over 2011. Additionally, about 93,000 riders were injured in motorcycle crashes in 2012, more than 10,000 than the previous year. Massachusetts’ riders might also be disheartened to hear that motorcyclists are 26 times more likely to be killed in an accident than a passenger car occupant.
These are just some basic statistics that can help our state’s motorists recognize the risk being posed to motorcyclists. When one of these wrecks occurs, a rider can suffer significant harm, including broken bones, a head or neck injury, permanent disability, or death. The ripple effect of such a crash can be long-lasting and life-altering. Physically and emotionally, a victim or his or her family can be devastated. Financially, they can be on the brink of ruin.
Luckily, though, those who have been injured by or lost a loved one to a negligent driver’s acts can file a lawsuit. Though it might not take away the pain, a successful lawsuit can help motorcycle accident victims and their families recover much needed compensation to cover medical expenses, funeral costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Hopefully it will also raise awareness of this important issue, helping keep other motorcyclists safe on the road.
